Agopie Pappas, nee Poulos, passed away peacefully in her home July 3, 2018. She was 91 years old. Born in Miami, Arizona to James and Despo Poulos in 1926, she was one of five daughters and three sons. Bessie Suter is the lone survivor of the eight siblings. Agopie's survivors also include her husband of 68 years, Harry Pappas, a born and bred Angeleno, as well as three children, Alex, Kathryn, and Jimmy and four grandchildren.
Agopie was a graduate of The University of Arizona where she was active in campus politics. She was elected the female student body president. The male student body president at the time was Morris Udall, who later ran as a Democratic candidate for President of the United States. Upon graduation, Agopie became a teacher in Phoenix.
Earlier, Agopie had met Harry at an AHEPA convention at the Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles. Subsequently, they were married at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Phoenix, Arizona in 1950. Harry and Agopie moved to Los Angeles, whereupon Agopie became a committed Californian. A devout churchgoer, she was among the first parishioners of Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral. She became an active member of Philoptochos in 1950 and was honored as the philanthropic organization's "Mother of the Year." She always was "Mother of the Year" to us. Harry adds she also was "Wife of the Year." She has left us a legacy of many memories, fidelity to the church and love, just like the meaning of her name in Greek, Agopie.
The Trisagion will be at 7:00pm on Thursday, July 12, 2018. The funeral will be at 10:30am on Friday, July 13, 2018. Both services will be held at Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Los Angeles, followed by interment at Rose Hills Memorial Park.
