Anastasios Themelis also known as Tasos was born in a small remote village in the state of Epirus Greece. He grew up with his mom, two brothers and sister living the rustic agrarian lifestyle. Eventually as a teenager the family moved to Piraeus and opened a bakery.
The war years were very difficult for Tasos Twice he cheated death; as a baker he risked his life baking bread and feeding the resistance against the Germans. He was arrested and served time in a German prison camp. Later in Kokkinia on Aug. 17 1944 he narrowly avoided death a second time escaping from the historic massacre of young men executed by the Germans.
After the war he met and romanced Jennie who he married October 26, 1947, three years later their son George was born. In 1952 the family packed up and with Jennie's mom, boarded an ocean liner leaving Greece coming to Brooklyn, New York.
Tasos stayed in his trade as a baker working very hard to provide for his family, often picking up extra days working 7 days a week. His ethics motivated him to make certain his family was well provided for. Eventually the family moved to Washington Heights New York to benefit from the Greek school, church and community. In America Tasos continued working as a baker and selflessly dedicated himself to providing for his family.
In 1971 the family moved to East Northport Long Island, purchased a home and opened a bakery that became very successful. He retired in 1984 moved to Los Angeles in 2002 that the family can be closer together with his son and granddaughter.
God gave Tasos a long life to enjoy his family. He was a gentle and ethical man who only wished the best for his friends and acquaintances. A devoted husband he was married 67 years at his passing.
God took him "as a candle dims so did his breath dying peacefully in his sleep." His loving smile and humor will be sorely missed.
