Angelo Joseph Treantos, known to all as "Mike", passed quietly in his sleep at 7:30 PM on October 13, 2015, in Veteran's Hospital in Long Beach, California at the age 92. His had a long and productive life. He was born in Boston on September 7, 1923. He was fascinated by technology and by the age 18 Mike was a radio engineer.
Mike joined the United States Navy on October 21, 1941, just two months before the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He served on several ships in the South Pacific as a radioman and left the Navy with the rate of Radioman First Class on October 14, 1947. He went ashore with the first wave of Marines on Iwo Jima because that battalion's radioman was stricken with appendicitis and Mike was at his battle station on the bridge when the Marine's asked for a last minute replacement.
After the war Mike put himself through Northeastern University in Boston. His major was Electrical Engineering. He worked first in defense in the Boston area where he quickly made a name for himself. He moved from defense to aerospace in the early 1960's when he became part of NASA. During that time he worked on several projects, including one with Wernher von Braun's team. He left NASA and returned to aerospace in the McDonald Douglas space program. He ultimately retired from Boeing Aircraft.
In his last year at Northeastern University he met and married the love of his life, Ann. He is survived by his wife Ann and three children, Emily and her husband John Pittaway, Michael Treantos, and Constantine Treantos. He has three grandchildren, Michael Treantos and Michelle Hamilton, and Catherine Murphy. From Catherine he has two greatrandchildren, Rebecca and Johnny Murphy. Trisgaion service will be Tuesday, October 20, 2015 at 7:00pm. Funeral Service will be Wednesday, October 21, 2015 at 10:00am, both held at St. Basil Greek Orthodox Church, 27129 Calle Arroyo # 1803, San Juan Capistrano, CA 92675. Interment to follow at Rose Hills Cemetery.
