Anthony Athan Mastor passed away peacefully at his home in Bel-Air on July 16, 2018. Tony was born in Fredonia, New York. He grew up in the small town in northwestern New York with his parents, Athan and Kalliopi Mastor, who had emigrated from Greece, with his brothers John and Arthur, and his sister Evie.
Tony played violin, piano, and sousaphone, and was Concertmaster in the Fredonia High orchestra. After high school, he was drafted into the United States Army. After serving his country for two years, Tony attended Syracuse University in New York. He majored in Engineering and graduated with honors. In 1949, Tony and his family moved to Los Angeles, where he met his wife to be, Sophie Pappas. They married in 1956. Tony pursued his graduate studies at UCLA, where he earned a PhD in Business. Tony taught Economics at UCLA, and concurrently grew his own real estate investment business along with his wife and partner, Sophie.
Tony and Sophie have been longtime active members of Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Los Angeles, and they both deeply cherish their Greek heritage and Greek-American community. Tony is survived by his beloved wife Sophie, his two children, Christian Mastor (Cheryl) and Andriana Mastor, and his grandchildren Ari and Leandros. In addition to his immediate family, he is survived by his brother John Mastor (June), sister-in-law Kiki Pappas, brother-in-law Jess Lasswell, nieces and nephews and many dearly loved friends. He will be deeply missed. May his memory be eternal.
Funeral services and Makaria will be held at 10:30 am on July 25, 2018 at Saint Sophia Cathedral, located at 1324 South Normandie Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90006. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Saint Sophia Cathedral Philoptochos at the address above.
