Obituary

Described by his wife Georgia as "Very brave, very strong, very smart." Provider, protector, mentor, leader known as a "Sterling fellow" and "Honest John" by all who knew him in the field of education and by his clients of his accounting practice. A life-long resident of the Los Angeles area with many devoted friends and relatives in a circle of loyalty which he returned to one and all. Parents Katherine Doganis Caras and Tom Caras (Athanasios Kotsoronis) Predeceased by twin sister, Penelope Caras Yokas, (Frank Peter Yokas, deceased). He is survived by his daughters and their spouses, Cathy and Chuck Nissen, Connie and Curtis McCoy, and Nancy and Chris Kallas. Grandchildren, Joanna and Patrick McCoy and Cara and Cristina Nissen. Sisters; Helen Caras Vlachos (Dino) and Faye Kyriax Demetriou (James) and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

A life long member of the Greek Orthodox Community of L.A.; early years at the Church of the Annunciation, San Julian Street. St. Sophia Cathedral from 1952. Loyal annual steward of St. Sophia, also life member. Served on St. Sophia Parish Council as chairman of the Camp, Election, and Audit, and Narthex Committees.
Chris graduated from Washington High School and later attended USC where he earned a B.S. in Accounting in 1950, a teaching credential in 1951 and a Master's Degree and Administrative credential.

Chris served during WWII as a staff Sergeant squad leader in the U.S. Army Infantry Pacific Division from June 29, 1944 to April 22, 1946.

From 1951-1953, he taught in the Long Beach School District. Chris was an employee of the Los Angeles School from 1953-1986 and taught Business Education, acted as a consultant, served as a vice-principal and principal. He also was an adult school counselor. In addition to his work in education, Chris had a private accounting practice. During retirement, he enjoyed gardening and fishing. His greatest joy was his family and his role as "Papoo" attending and supporting his grandchildren's sports and school events.

Funeral Services will be Saturday January 10, 2015 at 11:00am held at St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 1324 So. Normandie Avenue. Interment will be at Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills.
