Demetra (Didi) Skandalakis Kavadas passed away peacefully in Seal Beach at 80 years of age. She was predeceased by her husband Sam Kavadas, her sisters Angeliki Iliopoulos, Maria Filander, and her brothers
Dr. Nicholas Skandalakis
and Anastasios Skandalakis. She is survived by her sisters Aphrodite Boosalis, Martha Kaperonis, many nieces and nephews, several Godchildren, and numerous friends.
Demetra was born and raised in Molaoi, Greece to Iakovos Skandalakis and Fotini Kalkandi. She was the youngest of seven children. She graduated from high school in Athens. In 1961 she came to Long Beach to visit her brother Dr. Nicholas Skandalakis, and during that time she met the love of her life, Sam Kavadas, a high school teacher. They were married in June of 1962. During the summers they were traveling to different places and made friends in every place they went. She loved flowers and gardening. One of her greatest joys was hosting family and friends in her beautiful home in Seal Beach. Despite the fact that she didn't have children of her own, her number one joy was the love of children. To many of us Demetra was our second mother and a huge inspiration. Demetra helped many people unconditionally. She will be dearly missed.
