Obituary

Demetrios Tryfon Castritis, 79, of Long Beach, California, passed away in his sleep on Thursday, September 22, 2017 while vacationing in Nafplio, Greece.

Demetrios was born on August 9, 1938 in Agioi Theodoroi, Samos, Greece to Tryfon Demetrios Castritis and Ekaterini Castritis, both from Samos, Greece.

He attended and graduated both high school and college in Athens/Piraeus, Greece and college in Los Angeles, California. He proudly served in the Greek army.

On January 2, 1966 Demetrios married his beloved Paraskevi "Vivi" Efstathiou Castritis (July 9, 1939 - December 31, 2013). Their storybook 49-year marriage, shy by 2 days, produced two children, Tryfon and Flora.

Demetrios was employed as a quality control inspector at Honeywell International's aerospace division (originally Garrett AiResearch and Allied Signal) from 1976 until he retired in August 2004.

He was a very proud member of his Greek community. Demetrios was a member of AHEPA, taught Greek school, sang in the church choir, served as a church council member, and volunteered in every capacity he could.

Demetrios loved reading, gardening, socializing, traveling, attending church services every Sunday, teaching the Greek language, walking by the beach, listening to classical and Byzantine music, solving crossword puzzles, playing chess, dominoes and backgammon, listening to funny jokes, watching great movies, building model kit cars and ships, and, last but not least, loved his wife, two children and grandchildren beyond belief.

Demetrios is survived by his two children, Tryfon Demetrios Castritis and Flora Castritis Yakos, his two grandchildren, Nitsa and Evi Yakos, his son-in-law, John Yakos, his two sisters, Doukissa Vayianou and Sofia Adam, and two nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife Paraskevi "Vivi" Castritis, his parents Tryfon Demetrios Castritis and Ekaterini Castritis, his brother George, his grandparents, his mother-in-law Flora Efstathiou, and his father-in-law Stelios Efstathiou.

A celebration of life service (the "Trisagion") will be held at 7:00 p.m., Monday October 2, 2017 at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Long Beach, California. His funeral service will be held at the same place at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 3, 2017. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Mortuary in Cypress, California.
