Obituary

Dorothy Mae Sutherland passed away peacefully at her home in Santa Ana, California, surrounded by her family on April 27, 2024. She was born January 6, 1930, in Newcastle, Washington to Kenneth Morton and Annie Louise Pearson.

After graduating from Renton High School in Washington, she went to Brigham Young University for a year and then on to the College of Nursing at Emanuel Hospital in Portland, Oregon for her nursing degree. After graduation, she worked for two years in Oregon, and then got a job in Seattle at the Veterans Administration Hospital. After accepting a transfer to the psychiatric ward, she met a wonderful man, Charles Sutherland, who was also working in that ward. They married on June 13, 1955, in Bellevue, Washington. They lived there for six months until Charles graduated. Later Charles got a job with Hughes Aircraft Company in Culver City, California. They moved to California in February 1956. In August 1956 they had their first son, John Charles. Later they moved to Fullerton, California where their second, third, and fourth children were born; Jeffrey Lyle, Nancy Louise, and Mark Kenneth. In November 1961 Charles joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. On February 21, 1963, they were sealed in the Los Angeles Temple. In August 1963 they moved to Santa Ana, California. Two years later their youngest child, Linda Evelyn, was born.

In December 1966 Charles's job moved the family to Liege, Belgium until August 1968 when they returned to Santa Ana. In January 1970 Charles's job took him and the family to Milan, Italy for 18 months. Afterwards Charles and the family were transferred to Weybridge, Surrey, England for 18 months. Dorothy had many diverse experiences living and traveling with five young children around Europe. Together Charles and Dorothy had many wonderful experiences traveling the world. One of Dorothy's favorite adventures was when they were able to travel to Saudi Arabia.

In January 1973 they returned to Santa Ana, California where they have lived since. In 1992, Dorothy served as secretary to the Anaheim California Mission president. This began a life of service in the church as she went on to serve three more missions with Charles. In March 1999 they were called to serve in the Greece Athens Mission, serving in Jordan and Greece. In October 2002 they were called to serve in the Maryland Baltimore Mission. In April 2005, they were called to serve a third mission in the New Zealand Pacific Islands Area as executive secretaries to the president. They returned home November 2006.

Dorothy loved serving as a missionary, as a temple worker, and in her ward and stake. She held many callings throughout the years. Her most beloved and cherished calling was as a wife to Charles and mother to her five children.

Dorothy is survived by her loving husband, Charles, her children John (Barbara) Sutherland, Jeffrey (Val) Sutherland, Nancy (Terry) Hermansen, Mark (Tricia) Sutherland, and Linda (Steve) Mackie, 23 grandchildren and 35 (going on 37) great grandchildren.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her father, Kenneth Morton, mother, Annie Louise, brothers Keith Milo and Kenneth Donald, and a sister who died as an infant, Louise Orlean.
