George Chris Bovetas was born in Tripolis, Arcadia in a territory in the southern region of Greece, to Chris and Domina Bovetas in April 9, 1936. He was the third of four children, the only male child. He grew up during the German occupation during Word War II, in severe poverty. After the war was over, the family tried to survive, but it became apparent that something needed to change.
In 1956, at the age of seventeen, he along with his father and older sister Pat, took the long journey to the United States of America. There, after doing odd jobs, he finally ended up working in restaurants. In 1964, he along with his future brother in law, opened the first of many different restaurants, all of which became very successful.
In 1965, he went back to Greece, where he met and married his wife Sotiria. Together they had five children, three girls and two boys. They raised the family as well as anyone can and after a brief stay in Greece, in 1983 the family returned back to the United States permanently. He continued to work in the business, while the children were being raised until his retirement in 2002. He went on to help with business now run by some of the children while going to Greece for long periods of time.
He was doing well until 2011, when he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. He initially did very well until 2015 when he started having more complications from the condition. Finally this past few months the health worsened and on January 19, 2018 at 7:00 am left his last breath in his home surrounded by his family. He left behind his wife - Sotiria, five children Domina, Angela, Chris, John and Vasiliki, along with seven grandchildren ages nine though twenty one.
Trisagion will be at 7:00pm on Friday, January 26, 2018. The funeral service will be at 10:00am on Saturday, January 27, 2018. Both services will be held at Saint John Greek Orthodox Church, 405 N.
