George Glavas was born on July 11, 1929 in Kastria, Greece and entered eternal life on November 23, 2018.
George came to the United States from Greece in 1951 and settled down in Southern California, having lived in the cities of Huntington Park, Downey and Whittier during his lifetime. Working odd jobs from 1951-1954, George enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1954 and served for 4 years, until 1958. George was a proud American Veteran having served in the Air Force as a military police officer and was known as a "marksman" with both the pistol and rifle. After having served in the military, George began a successful career as a tool designer / maker with both Rockwell International and Boeing. He was an integral part of America's Space Program from its inception, designing tools for the Space Shuttle, as the Space Shuttle involved new parts / technology that had never existed previously. The many projects George worked on included the B1 Bomber and has mentioned before, the Space Shuttle. After his involvement in the Space Program, George decided to retire at the age of 58. Through all of George's important work, none of it was more important than his wife and his dedication to his church. George was an integral member of Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Los Angeles, where he served for over 30 years on the parish council, as well as with other church organizations.
George had a passion for handyman / carpentry work. He was a master at any home project you could imagine. Besides his own home, George would assist neighbors, friends and family with electrical, plumbing, drywall, masonry work, etcetera, and he did it with much joy in his heart while never asking for anything in return. George also loved to work outdoors in his garden, and his landscaping prowess was always the envy of his neighbors.
George was married to his loving wife Angie Glavas (predeceased) for 57 years. He is survived by his older brother (Christos), his younger brother (Dinos), and numerous nieces and nephews.
Trisagion (memorial) service will be held on Sunday, December 2, 2018 at 7:00 pm. Funeral service will be held on Monday, December 3, 2018 at 11:00 am.
