Georgia
Contogouris
July 23, 1939 – November 27, 2018
Georgia was born in Athens, Greece on July 23rd, 1939. She was part of a close-knit family with four sisters and two brothers. She lived through the German occupation of Greece and later the Greek Civil War.
As a young girl, she adored swimming and fishing with her father, Andreas, who was a skilled and passionate fisherman. Papou Andreas fed half their village through those difficult times. Georgia loved the Aegean Sea, loved to garden, and learned to cook with her loving mother, Katerina. From a young age, she and her family all worked together to provide for each other.
Georgia was best friends with her sister, Katia, and they were inseparable since childhood - until now. She was first in her class at school in Paris, and in her early years loved hairstyling and the fashion world. She also loved to sing and dance.
At a young age, Georgia met the love of her life, Christos Contogouris in Athens, and they were married two years later. Together they had three boys, Chris, Andreas, and Spyro. Georgia was very close to Christos' sister, Augusta, and her father-in-law, Spyridon.
Christos and Georgia came to the United States at the invitation of the Kennedy family, where Christos continued to excel in the hotel business. During their married life, Christos and Georgia lived in Pennsylvania, Boston, Palm Beach, Greece, New York and, eventually, Los Angeles.
Georgia was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. In recent years, she found her greatest happiness in spending time with her family in Los Angeles.
After six decades of devoted love together with her husband, Christos, Georgia lost her husband and father of her children here in Los Angeles in 2013, where services were held at our blessed Saint Sophia Cathedral.
A devoted grandmother and champion of Greek cooking and philoxenia (hospitality) for her friends and family, the world is not the same for the Contogouris family without her. While Georgia will be missed here, she is now surely in heaven with her beloved husband, Christos.
Funeral service was held at 10:30 am on Friday, December 7, 2018 at Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 1324 S. Normandie Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90006. Interment at Angelus-Rosedale Cemetery.
