Obituary

Listen to Obituary
Georgia Efstathiou, a loving Mother and adoring Yiayia (Grandmother) was born on August 29, 1944 in Agios Nikolaos, Greece and passed away peacefully at home on February 10, 2016 after her four year battle with cancer.

While six months pregnant with Georgia her mother, Athanasia had been widowed. Tragically killed during the Greek Civil War, her father George Zachos, never had the chance to meet her. A little while later, her mother remarried Nick Angelopoulos who raised her as one of his own. They relocated to Nemea where they worked in their own vineyard and farm.  She spent her childhood and teenage years there.  As time passed, she met her greatest love and husband, John Efstathiou.  In December of 1969, they moved to the U.S. with their daughter Maria and four years later their son George was born. Georgia was a devoted Mother and Grandmother to her children and grandchildren and helped raise them with great love, respect, kindness and compassion.

One of Georgia's many talents included crocheting, as well as cooking Greek food and pastries. She was an active member of her congregation at Saint George Greek Orthodox Church in Downey, California. She also shared in her duties in her Philoptochos Club, the ladies auxiliary.  Close to her heart were always her dear friends.  She inspired her children and people around her.  She will be remembered for her loving, caring and giving personality. She was an extraordinary person whose spirit, optimism, faith and unconditional love for her family and friends brought her happiness.

She is preceded in death by her father, mother, stepfather, husband as well as her brothers Jim, Gus and Taso Angelopoulos. She is survived by her daughter Maria, son-in-law Yiannis, son George, daughter-in-law Sandra and 3 grandchildren Christos, Eleni, and Yiannis.

The Trisagion service will begin at 7 pm on Tuesday, February 16, 2016 at Saint George Greek Orthodox Church, 10830 Downey Avenue, Downey, CA 90241.
