Gicas
Pollalis
May 1, 1924 – October 1, 2022
Gicas Pollalis, a resident of Santa Barbara since 1961, passed away on Saturday, October 1, 2022 at his home at the age of 98.
Gicas is survived by son Dino and his wife Kim, grandchildren Isabella and Maximilian, and numerous nephews and nieces with their families. He was predeceased by his 3 brothers and 4 sisters.
Gicas was born in Galatas, Greece to Demetrios and Katerina Pollalis on May 1, 1924. He was the 7th of eight children living and working on a family farm that feed many in the village during the Nazi occupation of WWII. He served in the Port Police during the Greek Civil War. After his service, he traveled to the island of Rhodes and started an agricultural business.
Gicas always had an affinity for America and wanted to immigrate. Through his uncle Gus and future wife Stella's aunt, Marika an arrangement was made for marriage. He was married to Stella on October 15, 1961 and started his own family. Coming to the USA with nothing other than the clothes on his back and a determination to succeed, he started his painting contractor and real estate businesses.
Gicas loved his family fiercely and worked hard to provide a better life for both his immediate and extended families. He enjoyed attending Saint Barbara Greek Orthodox Church and was a member of AHEPA. The marriage of his son and the birth of his grand children were great joys in his life. The time spent with his grandchildren greatly extended his life. Gicas had a caring heart and was always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need.
Trisagion service will be held at Saint Barbara Greek Orthodox Church at 7:30pm on Thursday, October 13, 2022. The funeral will take place at 10:00am on Friday, October 14, 2022, also at Saint Barbara Greek Orthodox Church, 1205 San Antonio Creek Road, Santa Barbara, CA 93111. He will be laid to rest at the Santa Barbara Cemetery. May his memory be eternal.
