Joe returned to his creator after nearly 102 years of a blessed life. He is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years Patricia, his son Mark, his daughter Benita, her husband Robert, their three children, Cheyenne, Clint and Dallas, and three nephews. He was born in Texas and moved to Sierra Madre in 1920. He enlisted in the army in 1941 and was assigned to the Fort Ord Panorama Newspaper where he took many pictures of army life, including one picture which became a recruiting poster for the American Legion. He also took the pictures documenting the exhumation of now Saint Junipero Serra. He lived in Sierra Madre for over 50 years where he made his living as a photographer, including taking regular retreat photographs at the Mater Dolorosa Retreat House for 28 years. His photographs over the decades of events in Sierra Madre have been donated and have been a significant contribution to the Sierra Madre Historical Society. He moved to Leona Valley in 1972, then with his wife spent years in Saugus and Monrovia. He will be missed by all. His funeral services will take place on Friday, March 10, 2017, at the Mater Dolorosa Retreat House in Sierra Madre. The rosary will begin at 9:30 a.m., followed by the Mass at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery in Montebello.
