Obituary

Joel Franklyn McIntyre was born on September 19, 1938 in Fairbury, Nebraska and died on August 24, 2018 in Arcadia, California. He was the eldest child and only son of the late Frank O. McIntyre and Maxine Olive Ward McIntyre of Nebraska, Pasadena and Arcadia. He had one sibling, Dr. Jerilyn Sue McIntyre (David Smith) of Salt Lake City, Utah, where she was formerly President of the University of Utah.

Joel's family moved to Pasadena, California in 1949. He attended Hale Elementary School, Woodrow Wilson Junior High School, where he was Student Body President, Pasadena High School, Stanford University and the UCLA School of Law where he was Articles Editor of the UCLA Law Review and to the Order of the Coif. He practiced law for 29 years with the international firm Paul Hastings, and for 25 years with various other firms he founded. He and his family lived for over 50 years in Arcadia.

He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, having served as a Bishop and in many other Church callings. He became a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity while at Stanford and was involved with other civic and professional organizations and a director of numerous public corporations and civic and professional organizations.

Joel was an avid reader and enjoyed golf and his association with the Los Angeles Junior Chamber of Commerce (of which he was President) and San Gabriel Country Club. He and his wife for many years maintained vacation homes in Colorado Springs and Big Bear.

Joel is survived by his loving wife and Eternal Companion of 60 years, Suzanne Jane Sahl formerly of Grass Valley and Modesto, California, who he met in Modesto while attending a Kiwanis Key Club tri-state Convention in 1956. He is also survived by 8 children [Joel, Jr. (Connie), David (Tracey), Jeffrey (Linda), Erin McGovern (Steve), Matthew (Andrea), Karyn Godbold (Jeffrey), Kathleen Anticevich (Ethan) and Michael (Teri)], 14 grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren. His family was his true joy and he loved each of them deeply.

Viewing for family and friends will begin Saturday, September 1, 2018 from 8:30am to 9:45am. Funeral services will begin at 10:00am, both held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Arcadia ward building, 614 Foothill Boulevard, CA 91006.
