John P. Machas was born on May 3, 1926. He is survived by his loving wife, Patti Pastis, his son Dick Machas, and his daughter Paula Donegan. He is also survived by his grandchildren Matthew Mattos, Michael and Katie Donegan and Kristin Monnette and two great-grandchildren Chase and Taylor Monnette. His step children Penny Changaris (Pete), Parisa Holt (Stephen) and Stephan Pastis (Staci) and their children Elenique, Kali, and John Changaris, Stephanie Holt, and Thomas and Julia Pastis.

John was proud to serve his country as an Army combat medic in Okinawa in World War II, earning the Victory Medal, two overseas service bars, Good conduct Medal, American Theater Ribbon, and the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon with two bronze battle stars. For thirty years he worked for General Dynamics as a technical animator. There was nothing he loved more than his family, but his love for his boat was a close second. If he wasn't transferring home movies into DVD's for his friends and family or taking care of tasks around the house, or managing the condo complex in which he and Patti lived, you could find him at Huntington Harbor with Patti working on his boat the "Vita-C" wearing his signature white sailor hat. He passed away by the boat doing what he loved on February 22, 2017.
