Kalliope K. Horaites of Alhambra, California passed away on May 26, 2016 at the age of 90. She was born on November 12, 1925 in Arethousa, Ikaria, Greece.
Kalliope was also known as "Popi" or "Kay" - married on July 26, 1947 at Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church in Chicago, Illinois to Constantine "Gust" Horaites who was also born in Arethousa, Ikaria.
She was a member of the Oinoe Chaper #14 of Pan-Icarian Brotherhood of America, Adrasteia Chapter of the Daughters of Penelope.
She loved to sing and loved to dance, and always enjoyed having her family around her.
She is pre-deceased by her father, Konstantinos Katsas, and mother Maria Katsas (Nee: Pitakas), loving husband Gust Horaites, eldest son
Steven Horaites
, her brother
Andreas Katsas
and sister Anna Telaloglou.
She is survived by sons George, James, Andreas (Lorna), Anthony, Peter (Tracy), and daughter-in-law Jean Horaites. She is also survived by Grandchildren: Dean (Brenda) Horaites, Siestini (Chris) Falkner, Anastasia (Bobby) Dean, and Dimitri, Alice, Kosta, Nikolas, Alekka, Donald and Brandon Horaites. She is survived by Great-Grandchildren: Steven, Nicolette, Logan, Marianthe, Kalliope and Odin.
Her siblings are Antigone Papachristopoulos (Konstantinos), Anna Telaloglou (Yannis), Kyriakoula "Koula" Tripodes (John), Andreas Katsas (Assimina), Kostia Parianos (Petros).
A cherished family story has it that when first meeting her future father-in-law Stelios Horaites, he questioned her petite figurine stature and asked, "How is someone so small and frail going to make "palikaria" to carry on our family name?" She responded, "Sir, I will give you six sons." True to her Ikarian word, she did exactly that.
Kalliope was very happy to be surrounded by her family and took a special pride in raising her six sons. As you can imagine it was a full-time job. As her sons grew up Kalliope did take a few jobs in food service, but she was always, first and foremost, a loving wife and home keeper. She enjoyed her life and life's pleasures. She was always the first one to step up onto the dance floor and she enjoyed singing whenever she could.
Gust and Popi ("Popi" was the name her Greek friends would usually call her) were life-long members of St. Anthony's Greek Orthodox Church in Pasadena, California. Popi was a member of the Saint Anthony Church Choir for many years. She continued singing throughout her life, and would often go into choruses of songs she learned as a child in grade school in Ikaria.
Kalliope passed quietly surrounded by her loving family.
