Kokenes, Katherine Vasila
Born April 24, 1918 in Brockton, MA to Greek immigrants, Aspasia and Harry Vasila, Kay passed away peacefully on March 7, 2016, one month before her ninety-eighth birthday. Predeceased by husband, Lt. Col William L. Kokenes USMC (ret.) and brother Andrew Vasila. Survived by nieces Andrea Ballas, Tina Callas, Kathy Manolopoulos, and nephew George Vasila. She was a lifetime member of Saint Sophia Cathedral and Daughters of Penelope.
Kay was raised in Brockton, Massachusetts. She and her mother moved west after the death of her father to be close to her brother who had settled in Los Angeles, California after serving in World War II. For many years she lived in Studio City, California. After retirement, she and her husband, Bill, resided in Las Vegas, Nevada to again be close to her brother, Andrew. She was a devoted sister to her brother throughout his life. Last October, Kay returned to California to be near her nieces, especially Tina who helped care for her in later years.
Katherine worked as a government administrator. She was an independent woman who was proud of her Greek heritage, enjoyed traveling the world, participating in church activities and AHEPA events.
