LA MIRADA-- Madeline Genkos, 81, passed away on May 18, 2015 at Mirada Hills Convalescent Home.
Madeline was the tenth of eleven children born to Demitri and Vasiliki Tsakanikas in White Plains, NY on August 16, 1933. She was devoted to her Greek Orthodox faith from an early age. Madeline graduated from White Plains High School, New York in 1951. During that year, she met and married the love of her life, Athan (Tommy) Genkos. On June 10, 1951, Madeline and Athan had a double wedding, with Athan's sister, Dorothy and her husband, Al Wilson, in New York. Madeline and Athan spent 33 happy years together before he passed on August 6, 1984. They had two children, Paula and George.
Madeline was a devoutly religious woman, who was dedicated to her faith. She was a founding member of St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Downey. Prior to that, she was a member of St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church in Anaheim for over 30 years. She was known by friends and strangers alike to be a very generous woman, always preparing delicious Greek food and pastries for others. She loved to cook and bake. She was a devoted Yia Yia to her three grandchildren, who she helped raise. She was generous with her time, money, love, and spirit. She is safely home, reunited with her husband, other loved ones, and most importantly, our Lord.
Madeline is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Paula and Michael Hittle; son, George Genkos; and three grandchildren Katie, Tommy, and Chrissy Hittle. She is also survived by one sister, Martha, and is preceded in death by her parents; nine siblings, Kathryn, Agatha, Penelope, Marie, Anna, William, Gus, Pete, and George; and her husband, Athan Genkos.
The viewing will be held at St. George Greek Orthodox Church, in Downey, on Thursday, May 21, 2015 at 7 p.m. The funeral service will be held at St. George Greek Orthodox Church on Friday, May 22, 2015 at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at Olive Lawn Memorial Park in La Mirada at 11:30 a.m. Father John E. Constantine will officiate both services.
