Mary Kathryn
Arapostathis
August 30, 1931 – October 10, 2021
Mary Lewis (Siokos) was born in South Gate, California to parents Louie and Rothopi who came from the Peloponnese region of Greece from the neighboring towns of Kiato and Xylokastro. Mary was an only child and was raised in the Greek Orthodox faith. They attended Annunciation of the Virgin Mary church, fondly known as the church on San Julian Street. Mary and her parents became members of Saint Sophia Cathedral in Los Angeles upon its consecration. She was a member of the choir under the direction of Frank Desby. She graduated from the University of Southern California in 1954 with a Bachelor of Science in Education: Social Studies. Mary was an elementary school teacher for ten years in the Los Angeles county school district. On April 21, 1963 she married the love of her life, Chris Arapostathis at Saint Sophia Cathedral. They moved to San Marino in 1966 to raise their only child Christiann. They were members of Saint Anthony Greek Orthodox church in Pasadena. Mary was also a member of Saint Nectarios church and shrine in Covina where she attended until her passing.
Mary was a kind, gentle, and humble lady whose elegance and grace was evident to all who met her. She devoted her entire life to family and friends, placing her own needs last. Her smile warmed the hearts of many and brought happiness to all. She was a woman of true faith and her positive attitude was admirable, especially after her beloved Chris passed away in 1998. She experienced tremendous joy when Christiann married Christos. There was an unbreakable bond between all three of them. Upon Mary's peaceful passing, Christiann and Christos were lovingly by her bedside.
Funeral services will be held at 10am on Saturday, October 16, 2021 at Saint Nectarios Church and Shrine in Covina, California. Interment immediately following services at Rose Hills Cemetery in Whittier, California.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to "The Life Giving Spring Monastery", mailing address: PO Box 549, Dunlap, CA 93621.
