Obituary of Mary Naomi (Holmes) STANFORD
1936 - 2013
Mary Naomi (Holmes) STANFORD passed away Thursday, November 7, 2013 at her San Marino, California residence after a lengthy illness. She was 77.
Mary grew up in San Pedro, California, the youngest child of Charles Albert, Sr. and Naomi Lydia (Simons) Holmes. After graduating from San Pedro High School, she earned a bachelors degree from Brigham Young University and did some graduate studies at the University of Utah before starting her career as a teacher.
Teaching secondary school Latin and English took her to Sacramento and then back to Southern California, where she met and married Bruce Evan Stanford, whom she married on February 21, 1963 in the Los Angeles Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. With the arrival of their first child, Mary left teaching to devote herself to caring for her family, including four sons and three daughters.
Well-known throughout the San Marino Unified School District for her involvement behind the scenes, Mary was a passionate advocate for her children and for high academic standards. She volunteered in various roles in the schools and with her church while raising her children and developing much-praised sewing skills, which she contributed to numerous school projects including several years of Grad Nite costumes. A recipient of both the Golden Nugget and Carver "C" awards for her service to K.L. Carver Elementary School over the years, she later worked as a substitute teacher. More recently, Mary took up knitting and loved making gifts for her grandchildren and her friends' children and grandchildren.
Mary is survived by Bruce, her devoted husband of 50 years, their seven children, and their families: Theron, Kevin (Shay), Lesley (the late William IV) Ford, Necia (Mark) Billinghurst, Kendra, Brandon, and Ryan. She especially loved being "GrandMary" to William Ford V and to Gretchen and Jamie Stanford.
Funeral services for Mary will be held on Saturday, November 16, at 11:00 a.m. at the Huntington Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 6249 Kauffman Avenue, Temple City.
