Nikolas K. Tripodis passed away peacefully at his home on December 21, 2016 surrounded by his family, at the age of 93. He was born on the island of Ikaria on October 29, 1923 to Kosta and Triantafillia, the second of six children. During WWII and the occupation of Ikaria by the Axis powers, Nikola served in the Resistance Forces fighting alongside his fellow countrymen in the Middle East and North Africa.
In 1951, Nikolas married Styliani Stavrinoudaki and they had three children, Konstantinos, Yiannis, and Georgia. He emigrated to the U.S., working in New York and Canada from 1960-1963, returned to Ikaria, and in 1969 the whole family immigrated and settled in South Pasadena, California. He worked with his sister Argyro Charnas and the Tripodes family at Gus' BBQ for nine years while investing in residential real estate.
He was a long-time member of Chapter Oinoe of the Pan-Icarian Brotherhood and traveled often to Ikaria with his wife, Stella, staying six months at a time and keeping in close contact with his family and friends there. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Stella, children Konstantinos (Catherine), Yiannis (Helene), and Georgia (Aris) and his grandchildren, Erini, Stelanie, Niko, Orion and Aeson as well as his brothers, Simon and Demosthenes Tripodis.
The Trisagion service will be held on Wednesday, December 28th, 2016 at 7 pm, followed by the funeral on Thursday, December 29th, 2016 at 10:30 am, both at Saint Anthony Greek Orthodox Church in Pasadena, California. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Pan-Icarian Foundation, Post Office Box 79037, Pittsburgh, PA 15216-0037 which will be designated for the nursing home on Ikaria. Please indicate "in memory of Nikolas Tripodis" when sending your check.
