Panajiotis "Panos"
Sotirios Pentheroudakis
August 14, 1930 – January 9, 2020
Panajiotis Sotirios Pentheroudakis, 89, went home to the Lord on January 9, 2020, in San Diego, surrounded by his loving family.
Born August 14, 1930, in Athens, Greece, he was the son of Emmanouel and Chrisoula Pentheroudakis. His father was a military doctor during World War 2, whose career and multiple postings resulted in Panos and his family traveling extensively throughout Greece during his early years. He graduated high school in Athens, then graduated from the National Technical University of Athens (Athens Polytechnic), where he received a degree in both mechanical and electrical engineering. He then traveled to the United States, where he received his Masters in Engineering at Washington University in St. Louis, MO. He relocated to Los Angeles in 1957 and taught graduate level classes at the USC School of Engineering while completing all his coursework towards a PhD. He pursued a career as an aerospace and avionics engineer at the Lockheed Aircraft Company, working on many aircraft designs and other military projects. He raised his family and lived in the same home in Glendale, California for 49 years, before moving to San Diego in 2017 to be closer to his children.
Until the end, he loved, pursued, and truly enjoyed the fellowship of close family and friends. He was at one time fluent in five languages, including Esperanto. He had an endless thirst for knowledge and excelled in all his chosen hobbies, including backgammon, bridge, poker and Sudoku. He stayed informed by daily reading the entire LA Times and Hellenic Herald. A proud Greek, his love of watching tennis peaked during the reign of Pete Sampras. An avid LA Lakers fan, he loved watching Kobe play.
Panos was a member of AHEPA - the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association. He was a long time member of the Burbank Chapter #442, and was initiated on October 21, 1964.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Angeliki Pentheroudakis; his daughter Lora Pentheroudakis and grandchildren Alexander and Natasha; his son Manoli (Nicole) Pentheroudakis, and grandchildren Nicolas and Sasha; his daughter Eleni (Giuseppe) Ammirati, and grandchildren Emanuele, Chiara and Anna; his brother Michael (Dina) Pentheroudakis; nieces and nephews Angelos (Valerie), Xeni (Christos), Chryssoula (Alex), Emmanouela (Panagiotis), Nicholas (Charlie), and many close grand nephews and nieces, koumbari, godchildren, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents Emmanouel and Chrisoula Pentheroudakis, son John Phillip Giannikas, sister Maria Dassiou, brother-in-law Harry Zavos, and parents-in-law Nicholas and Eleni Zavos
