Penelope "Penny" Philopoulos Spirtos fell asleep in the Lord at the age of 90 on July 4, 2018 in Tucson, Arizona surrounded by her loving family. She was born to Greek immigrant parents, Andrew and Amalia Philopoulos, on February 4, 1928 in Chicago, Illinois. She now rejoins her late husband of over 60 years, Jack Nicholas Spirtos, M.D. (2011). She is survived by her 3 children Nicholas Spirtos, Maria Theodorou (Andy) and Emily Koulos (Peter). She was the loving grandmother of 12 grandchildren (Tonie Nicole, Pennie Nicole, Teddy, Jaclyn, Aris, Harry, Pennie Marie, Toni-Marie, Penelope, Lea, Jack and Nicoletta) and the adoring great grandmother of 9 great grandchildren (Nikolaos, Giannoula, Mia, Andreas, Elliana, Theodore, Demetri, Jack Perry, and Nikolas).
Penny was a vibrant, gregarious, loving and sincere friend to all of the people in her life. Her house and certainly her kitchen were always open to friends and family and even to those she had never met before but were our friends and were just in need a place to spend a night. She was more than the matriarch of our family – she was our foundation, our conscience and our guiding spirit helping to shape our lives into the people we are today. Though her last several years were a battle with Parkinson's Disease, her compassionate and caring personality and quick wit shined through. Her incredible legacy and inner beauty will live on in all of us. Our Yiayia Penny was truly an angel on earth and most fitting that as a die-hard baseball fan she followed and rooted for her beloved Angels! She is now an angel herself in heaven and in the loving arms of Christ, our Lord.
