In loving memory of Vivian Niel White, son of Niel Oliver Hale White and Lula Savannah Wade White
Vivian was born in Ione Oregon in 1918 during the Worldwide Flu Pandemic. He grew up in the Ukiah Oregon area first at Claude White's ranch outside of Ukiah helping raise horses for the military, then at Hideaway Springs, where the family was caretakers for Mr. Scott. During those years Lloyd Wade, Vivian's first cousin was adopted as a family member serving as brother to Vivian, and remaining close through the remainder of their lives. Lloyd later became mayor of Ukiah as an adult. As a youth, Vivian was educated in a one room school house grades 1-7, and then at Lexington High School where he graduated with honors. He followed by attending college in LaGrande, Oregon at Eastern Oregon University. The family moved to a new home in 1942 at a ranch south of Pilot Rock, Oregon.
Vivian served in the armed services during World War 2 as an enlisted personnel. He advanced through self determination as specialist 2 in veterinary services and was promoted several times to the final rank of Staff Sergeant for the commanding colonel at Fort Ord. While on leave from Fort Ord, Vivian met June Scott, the love of his life and in 1945 in Marysville, California they married after Viv received honorable discharge from the United States Army.
They returned home to NE Oregon and assisted Viv's father on the cattle ranch, where they gave birth to Brad Marshall White in 1949. They then moved to Utah so Vivian could attend Utah State University where he graduated with honors having a Masters Degree in Education. Vivian's Masters thesis in Education was adopted into Utah State law and then into federal law so that children would have safety with a stop sign and flashing light attached to all school buses for utilization when stopped. During the 1940s and the 1950s, Vivian also became a published novelist, and poet laureate, and composer of war song tunes.
The young family then returned to Oregon and settled down in Heppner near his Aunt Amanda Wade Duvall where he became a Vice Principal of Heppner High School. In 1953 their second son was born, Craig Erven White. By 1956 Vivian became an English teacher in the Long Beach Unified School District and the family moved to Garden Grove California, and then shortly after to their home in Anaheim. Shortly afterwards, Vivian advanced his career in his move to Lakewood High School as an English, American Literature and American History and Spanish teacher where he stayed for 30 years. In 1960 Vivian and June conceived Niel Owen White.
In 1961 Vivian, Brad, and Craig were baptized into the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, joining the church that June had been born into. While he continued his career in California, each summer the family returned to Oregon to assist his father on the family ranch, offering the family the opportunity to visit Vivian's relatives in Oregon. During the end of each summer the family was blessed to be able to visit June's family in Utah on the way back to California.
The summer ranching tradition fulfilled Viv's long time ambition of horsemanship to raise Appaloosas during the retirement years on the family ranch which were filled with trips to see relatives. During the times in Oregon, they enjoyed spending time with the families of Lloyd and Norma Wade, Lonnie and LaVerne Henderson, Ken and Helen Wade and Lois Duvall, at family reunions at Battle Mountain State Park and at their homes. Additionally were trips spent with June's older brother Delwood Scott and relatives in their RV, and boat excursions with June's brother Gardner Scott and family, and a trip to Japan spent with his son Craig and family, as well as ranch trips with son Niel and family, and watching his son Brad fly at Escape Country and Torrey Pines. Retirement years were also enjoyed spending time with Viv and June's grandchildren.
Vivian is survived by his beloved wife June Scott White, sons Craig Erven White and Niel Owen White, and grandchildren Christopher White, Jonathon White, Sean White, Ryan White, and Hannah White. In Memory honoring the passing of their eldest child Brad Marshall White on November 3, 2011.
Today's services for Vivian Niel White are followed by a military burial service at the Riverside Veteran's Cemetery and a luncheon at the ward.
