In 1942, the family moved to Seattle where Bill graduated from Lincoln High School in 1955. In June 1959 he graduated from the University of Washington where he earned a degree in accounting and was treasurer of Delta Tau fraternity. In the winters he worked as a tow lift operator at Snoqualmie Pass.

During his high school and university years, Bill was an active member of the Boy Scouts. He was a camp staff member at Camp Parsons (1953-1957) and the first Lodge Chief of the newly formed Order of the Arrow Lodge. Upon graduation, Bill enlisted in the Navy and was sent to Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island and was commissioned an Ensign in February 1960 and was later part of the invasion force during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Bill's ship, the USS Duval County (LST758) was featured in the movie PT 109 chronicling this historic event. Upon release from active duty, Bill joined the Naval Reserve retiring after 25 years with the rank of Commander.

While on active duty in Norfolk, VA, Bill met his future wife Venetia "Venny" Drates. They were married on June 13, 1964 at the Annunciation Cathedral. Later, Bill converted to Orthodoxy at Saint Katherine Greek Orthodox Church, Falls Church, Virginia.
