Obituary

Yorgos Adamis was born in Athens, Greece in 1974. He was a composer, improviser, multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and teacher. His multiple experimental music compositions explore the use of extended vocal and instrumental techniques, unusual instrumentation choices (including instruments deriving from different cultures and played in a non-traditional style) and the combination of electro-acoustic and improvised music. Evening length concerts of his original music performed by The Yorgos Adamis Ensemble as well as solo individual compositions performed by Adamis as well as several contemporary music ensembles have been presented in Greece (Athens, Chios, Corfu, Hermioni, Patmos, Rhodes), The United Kingdom (Leicester, Leeds, London, York), The Ukraine (Odessa), Russia (Moscow) and The United States (Boston, Los Angeles, New York City, Philadelphia, San Jose). He earned a B.A. degree in Music from The University of York (U.K.), an M.A. in Contemporary Performing Arts (Music) from the University of Leeds – Bretton Hall (U.K.) and an MFA in Composition from California Institute of the Arts in Los Angeles (U.S.A.).

Yorgos Adamis was the son of Greek composer Michael Adamis and offered his voice to his father's composition "Kratema" in the 2001 recording. Yorgos Adamis also offered his skills as an improviser, multi- instrumentalist and vocalist for film composers Marco Beltrami and Buck Sanders. As a result of this collaboration, Adamis is featured in the motion pictures The Hurt Locker, The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada, Flight of the Phoenix and The Omen. In 2019 Yorgos Adamis worked with and provided original music for filmmaker, installation artist, activist and performer Wu Tsang on a new project inspired by the artist's installation performance One emerging from a point of view, 2019. Adamis has collaborated in multiple interdisciplinary projects with video artists, jugglers, directors and primarily dancers and choreographers including multiple works created for and in collaboration with his wife - dancer and choreographer Liz Hoefner Adamis. His last recorded music composition was for the collaboration Small Christmas Suite 2020 – in one way or another – a discussion between friends about Christmas – that hasn't yet taken place conceived by Dora Panagopoulou and Tim Ward.

Yorgos Adamis taught music theory, composition, improvisation and music for dance in higher education in California as well as music theory, choral studies and recorders in the Glendale Unified School District. He was also a guest artist and offered lecture demonstrations at many colleges/universities including New England Conservatory, Princeton University, Boston University, California Institute of the Arts, Scripps College, (USA) The Institute of Research for Music and Acoustics (IRMA) in Athens, Greece and The School of Oriental and African Studies – SOAS in London, (U.K.). He was a full-time Music Instructor and Vocal Technique Teacher at the charter school Renaissance Arts Academy located in Eagle Rock from 2004 – 2010. He taught classes focused on Traditional and Western vocal techniques, Music Theory, Listening Skills, Music Appreciation, Composition and Performance Skills. Yorgos Adamis founded the school's unique 100-person touring choir in 2005 that specialized in traditional world music, contemporary choral works and classical works and performed and opened the Hollywood Bowl Summer Season of 2010 in Los Angeles. He also created original compositions for full choir and string orchestra written for and performed by the students of Renaissance Arts Academy culminating in a performance at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in 2010.

Yorgos Adamis is survived by his 10-year old daughter Niamh Panayiota Adamis as well as his wife and partner of 19 years Elizabeth (Liz) Hoefner Adamis. Niamh was his constant companion and he taught her as much as he could about music, life and what it means to love and to be loved in the ten years they were together. He was a true friend, loving son, loyal brother to Thanasis, doting father, attentive husband and the epitome of a life lived to the fullest in love.
